Do People Really Understand Fascism?

Everyone is taught, quite rightly, that Fascism is bad. But do they really know what it is, other than to name the atrocities of WW2 and the Holocaust?

We look at the differences in how the education system and the media have protrayed both Fascism and Communism in the past, and whether there really is an appreciation for the terms left and right wing any more.

As usual we dig into the definitions, and analyse individual aspects of the state in detail, such as the monetary system and state regulation of industries.

After all is said and done, was the end of the 20th century a huge missed opportunity to banish authoritationism forever through education?

Laughing At Politicians – The Best Political Humour

This week, Andrew starts with an analogy. Anti-fascists maintain that if you’re not a communist, you’re on a slippery slope to fascism. He asks whether this means that if you’re not obese, you’re on a slippery slope to anorexia. Is that analogy any more ridiculous? And does is stand up to Elliott’s Law?

Andrew and Nic move on to laughing at various politicians and ask whether they are all ‘fair game’. They then discuss our favourite humourous political photos. And just how many pictures of Jeremy Corbyn does Andrew have on his phone?

The Fall Of Nicolae Ceausescu

In this episode, Andrew tells the story of Nicolae Ceausescu. Something he’s wanted to do since Christmas 2019, the thirty year anniversary of his execution.

From a troubled upbringing including multiple teenage arrests to his blackly comic last stand in Bucharest, Andrew tries to illustrate just how evil, and insane, he really was.

This podcast contains some of the funniest and some of the most tragic stories of the man himself and his diabolical rule over Romania.

Elliott’s Law

This episode, we discuss Elliott’s Law, which Andrew has just created:

a) In politics, respect only flows one way: in the direction of statism.

People more statist than you are always “misguided”, people less statist are always “dangerous”.

There’s this idea that a little (or a lot) more state than what you prefer, is always far better than ever so slightly less.

b) The more you are demonised by people more statist than you, the more you demonise people less statist.

In this respect, objectivists are no better than any other socialist. In fact, they’re often worse.

We also discuss technocracy, which Nic has been investigating. Are technocrats the ultimate hard centrists?

Virtue Broadcasting

Further to Andrew’s recent blog post about Virtue Broadcasting, we take the topic further.

We discuss virtue signalling in general, before moving on to the louder, shoutier form that is broadcasting. We talk about different forms of signals, from Twitter bios to mask wearing to clapping like a trained chimpanzee every Thursday evening.

We talk about Ben & Jerry’s recent Twitter rant and ask whether it makes any difference to us. Do we really care about the opinions of companies we buy from? What would it take for us ro stop buying from them?

Are Today’s Socialists Any Different?

In this episode, Andrew asks whether today’s socialists, who try very hard to distance themselves from the socialists of the past, are really any different?

What are today’s socialists promising that yesterday’s didn’t promise in the past? And are their methods any different? If not, why should we expect any different outcomes?

Nic then asks if we can apply the same logic to centrists.  To do this, we discuss the different types of centrists, and ask whether you can have a hard and a soft centrist, and what distinguishes them.

We also talk about how the private sector is far better at adapting to changes in demand than the public sector and how the current Covid19 crisis has shown government run institutions to be very slow to react.

Are Humans Instinctively Collectivist?

In this edition, Nic asks whether human beings inherently want to collectivise.

We ask the further questions: If this is indeed the case, is it built in? Or is it the result of indoctrination?

We mull over what collectivism really means, and if it’s compatible with a libertarian society.

We then talk about collectivisation in action, with examples of public sector contracts, before talking about how failing (and, in particular, failing quickly) can help businesses. Something that is absent from state bureaucracies.

The Berlin Wall Fell 30 Years Ago

It’s the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall – a crucial moment in the late 20th century that signalled the end of the Cold War and the retreat of Communism.
So what has changed since then, and do people born after this moment have different sensibilities when it comes to who the “bad guys” are?
We discuss whether terrorism was the replacement of communism as that perceived enemy, and how it impacts popular culture, and today’s political debate.

Climate Change And Extinction Rebellion

Are we heading for the end of the human species as predicted by Extinction Rebellion?

In the middle of the second week of London protests and blockades, we discuss some of the issues surrounding Anthropogenic Global Warming, and climate change in general.

Does it play into their hands if we arrest the protesters, as George Monbiot orchestrated this afternoon?

If humans really are causing the planet to warm, then if communism really the answer?

What about the fact that ice cores show that the planet warms and cools on its own, and that the Medieval Warming Period and Little Ice Age existed?

We discuss all this, and how it’s good news that Greta Thunberg didn’t win the Nobel Peace Prize, and how instead of following her every move, we should focus on people like Boyan Slat, who at age 16 decided to make a real difference and clean up the planet.

Dr Kristian Niemietz Interview: Socialism, Capitalism and Liberalism

We are joined by the Head of Political Economy at the Institute of Economic Affairs, Dr Kristian Niemietz, for a conversation on the phenomenon of modern support for socialism, whether apologists for capitalism help their cause, and whether we’ll see a new classical liberal revolution in our lifetimes.
