Left Leaning Language and Grievance Signalling

Is a common language enough any more or do you need to somehow signal your political or woke intentions?  How does that work when the Overton Window shifts so frequently?

We talk about the evolution of terms such as “Coloured People” and “People of Colour” to define groups of people, and whether its a feature of the woke or broadly the political left to signal how up to date you are by using the most trendy phrase.

Has virtue signalling started leading to a new form: grievance signalling.  And is that more about feeling safe by identifying with a tribe?

And does Nic have a problematic car…?

The Great Derangement

After more than a week of Black Lives Matter protests, and statues being torn down, we discuss whether destruction of public property is as bad as private property, and how the Autonomous Zone in Seattle has already formed at least one government since ditching the last one.  The Minneapolis Police force is being officially dismantled, but what will be created in its place, and is this a good experiment?

J K Rowling has put the cat amongst the pigeons again with her thoroughly reasonable and logic tweets on biological sex and the existence of women, but yet the woke are in full backlash.  Are the general public starting to see the inherent contradictions in woke ideology?

Maybe we are under no more danger any more from Coronavirus (hint, we kind of never where), and that’s why all this woke nonsense has surfaced again.  It’s amazing what you can do while you are on government paid furlough.

And what of Boris?  Does he resemble another former Tory Prime Minister?

The Witcher, Wokeness and Bad TV

“Evil is Evil. Lesser, greater, middling… Makes no difference. The degree is arbitary. The definition’s blurred. If I’m to choose between one evil and another… I’d rather not choose at all.”
~ Geralt of Rivia
The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski
In this first edition of 2020, Nic talks about his Christmas break of watching a load of TV, and how it’s made him want to rant about wokeness.
From the film Mary Queen of Scots, and it’s jarring historical inaccuracies to BBC’s His Dark Materials, which is just plain bad, we talk about what you should and shouldn’t do with a character, and whether changing history makes something science fiction.
But it’s not all bad as Netflix’s The Witcher proves to have a lead character with a great moral compass, along with great acting and story, and production values that leaves His Dark Materials, well… in the dark.
After Ricky Gervais’s savaging of Hollywood wokeness in the Golden Globes, is it time for more libertarian characters in film and TV?

Formal Language and Woke Culture

In a week dominated by reports in the media of parliament using inflammatory language, and the announcement that Sam Smith wants people to use new preferred pronouns, we discuss whether our natural language is becoming more like a formal one.

What are the differences between a formal and natural language? What’s the importance of context in our speech and communication?

Do our MPs go too far with words like “surrender” and “betrayal”?

We make predictions of where this may all end, and if we are seeing the turning point against woke culture.
